SOAP API integration for Apache Airflow
SOAP didn't go away. Banking, insurance, telecom, and government workloads still rely on it daily. BatchFoundry installs production-grade SOAP operators on Airflow — WSDL-aware, WS-Security-capable, fully observable.
Why SOAP still matters
Mainframe modernization and core-banking integrations are SOAP-first. Insurance settlement systems, telecom OSS/BSS, government tax APIs, and many SAP ERP RFC façades are SOAP. Pretending it's all REST is how integration projects fail mid-programme, when the team discovers the legacy endpoint only speaks WSDL 1.1 with UsernameToken.
The BatchFoundry SOAP framework
Built on zeep. SoapOperator accepts a WSDL URL or a checked-in WSDL file, exposes operations as Airflow tasks, validates request and response payloads against the WSDL schema, supports WS-Security UsernameToken / X.509 Certificate / SAML, MTOM binary attachments, and SAML token forwarding for federated callers.
Patterns we install
- WSDL-as-code: WSDLs live in the DAG repo and version alongside the DAGs
- Strong typing: the operator binds WSDL types to Airflow params so payload errors fail at parse time, not runtime
- Connection pooling: persistent requests.Session per Airflow connection
- Failure semantics: SOAP Fault codes mapped to Airflow exception types so retry policies can be written against business meaning, not HTTP transport
What BatchFoundry delivers
- Inventory of every SOAP call in your current scheduler or ESB
- SoapOperator library with WSDL-aware, WS-Security, and MTOM support
- WSDL-management discipline checked into Git
- Optional ESB-decommissioning roadmap if you're using BizTalk, TIBCO, or webMethods purely for SOAP plumbing
What we won't tell you
If your only SOAP usage is one quarterly tax filing call, building this framework is overkill. We'll tell you when one well-tested DAG with a hardcoded WSDL is the right answer.
